The piracy in book publishing - 2026
The value of sales lost to book piracy in 2025 amounts to €722 million, equal to 30% of the total market (excluding the school sector and exports), nearly one third of the total. For the national system as a whole—also including related activities such as logistics and services—the loss amounts to nearly €2 billion (€1.95 billion precisely) in revenue and €313 million in lost tax income. These figures translate into 4,500 lost jobs in the book industry and 11,500 jobs including related sectors. The estimate of the scale of book piracy in 2025 (survey conducted in October 2025, covering the previous 12 months) is contained in the fourth study on the subject commissioned by the Italian Publishers Association (AIE) from Ipsos Doxa and presented in Rome during a conference organized by Gli Editori, the joint consultation and action agreement between AIE and the Italian Federation of Newspaper Publishers (FIEG).
